High Power Density Axial-Flux Permanent Magnet Motor for Electric Bike Application

The demand for electric bikes has been increasing in recent years, and so their drive, which requires a high power-to-weight ratio or power density. An axial-flux permanent magnet motor with Halbach-array is an excellent choice bike drives thanks to its known characteristics of density, reliability, efficiency. However, because machine topology not common, the manufacturing process can be challenging, especially stator core. A good solution this problem remove tooth tips, as simplifies core shape makes easier. proposed limited housing dimension constraints; thus sensors were implemented support Hall detecting rotor position. designed models analyzed using 3D finite element method (FEM) determine electromagnetic thermal characteristics. prototype was manufactured based on final design tested under rated conditions validate analysis results.
